A bug eyed head wearing a beanie stares directly at the viewer. Directly below the eyes it is making the 👉👈 gesture with its hands and creating a star or static electricity where the two fingertips meet. The background features "swelling lines" to create light and shadow to suggest clouds, though, the directions of the lines switch several times creating a disjointed, scratchy feeling on closer viewing. Additionally, some elements are carved to create a more volumetric appearance, while others feature stark outlines and photoshop-esque dropshadows. Each hand and each eyeball is carved differently, making the figure look deranged or maniacal, though not necessarily sinister.

In the negative space below the touching fingertips the words "JUST GOOFIN" are carved in white. The title refers to these words in that I was *literally* just goofin when I carved this image. This image, as well as "O N O M A T O P O E I A" were carved within days of each other, shortly after my graduation with a degree in Painting from KCAI in 2020, during the early stages of the Covid-19 lockdown. Being without a studio I was not able to paint in the messy, sculptural manner I'd developed and decided what the hell, I'd just goof off and make a couple linocuts.

My goal was to shake the rust off of that old bike I still remembered how to ride; I wanted to just have fun making something that didn't take itself overly seriously, just for the joy of making, or even just for the satisfaction of creating those little curls of linoleum that happen when carving. I didn't even know if I wanted to print it or not at first. I carved as disjointedly as I could in order to practice and test out different markmaking techniques and I feel I pushed the limits to the point of breakage. Nonetheless I enjoy it for its aloofness and obstinacy. I also enjoy the clash between the calmness of the image and the frenzied manner in which it appears to have been made. In reality it was carved with the same deliberateness and care, and at the same pace as any of my other work.

For me this is an image of keeping oneself entertained in a wholesome or at least productive fashion despite intense cabin fever in a time of global uncertainty.
